Interactive business stories
“Mindnumbing.” “Verbose.” “Outdated.” Prospects began souring on Corpedia’s rote, linear, click-and listen monologue lesson structure — so I created a plan B.
By integrating the lesson with a non-linear, interactive story framework — a dialogue with a high level of engagement emerged, and clients ate it up.
It took the...

The Auditorium Toy Co. box
The Auditorium Toy Co. box
The biggest challenge in building a toy company was sourcing packaging that was as unique, timeless and durable as the creations it held. A custom solution became the only option.
The challenge was met by using the same time-honored process that I’ve applied to my other packaging projects — trial and error. After weeks of fighting and failing with countless...

How to grab attention with a :30 spot
How to grab attention with a :30 spot
When I put a fake station glitch at the beginning of a :30 spot on recycling it caught viewers off guard, and they perked up — just in time for the real ad to begin.
The success of the spot helped increase recycling awareness by 26% and won a Telly, and a bunch of Gold Addies in 2009.

In 2006, I created the Businessbib as a viral marketing experiment. To date, it’s been seen by over 35 million people worldwide.
Universal Pictures licensed it in 2009 as the centerpiece of a major film campaign, triggering a second wave of massive exposure.

I spent most of the 90s in a band
Doo Rag was a band formed together with my friend Bob, as a branding experiment, in the early 1990s. It exploded into an industry.
Everything about the band was tuned to maximize differentiation without minimizing mass appeal. The formula was simple — bent, blues inspired rock, unusual presentation, KISS level merchandise and branding.
Numerous major recording...

The problem with this promotional tool that I concepted and designed was that it displayed the data too quickly — so I throttled down the presentation to increase anticipation and make it look like it was doing something.

A band based on the soundtrack to my ill-spent youth
Coin was a rock band I formed in 1996. The sound was centered around obscure Commodore 64 videogame melodies mixed with live drums. The idea originated in the late 1980s while experimenting with Pac-Man sounds in my first band, Storks.
In the early 2000s, Coin’s pioneering sound spawned a new musical genre known as chiptune, or 8-bit. ...

How I led a company from canoe to yacht
When a friend asked me to help repair his sinking educational content startup, I dove in headfirst. Within a year, Corpedia Inc. (http://www.corpedia.com) was not only seaworthy, but the largest ship in the water. Here’s what I did.
Years ahead of the competition, I concepted and deployed a methodology for Corpedia to rapidly produce high quality,...

Princess Cruise Lines had a big problem with the front-end of their in-cabin media consoles fleet-wide — they were too slick for seniors. I repackaged their presentation and navigation to maximize appeal for guests in their golden years.

Failed pirate mob
Did I have the chops to spawn a national-scale flashmob using craigslist? No.
In the end, only a few thousand participated nationwide. However, I gained some useful insight into the writing tone and placement of viral marketing disguised as craigslist posts. (Which is an entirely different thing from spam)

Styx II — possibly the worst DJ album ever
In 1995, I created DJ Styx II with the sole intention of making hip hop tracks that drank from a stream no one else would touch. Ten years later I took another sip and created T-Rax, a fully developed touring band concept.

Storks — a band that could easily beat up your dad
Inspired by the angelic harmonies of ABBA and the clang-clack of Einstürzende Neubauten, I created the experimental concept group, Storks, in 1987. Ten years later, I picked up where this left off, and formed the electronic band Coin.

How to get a stranger to steal your businesscard
To promote my line of limited edition heirloom toys, I posted signs engraved with a high impact message in public washrooms. By day three, they had all vanished, pocketed by complete strangers and displayed in their private homes — generating 9 sales and 100+ qualified leads.

Until I find the right talent, T-Rax is a band concept in a holding pattern — Two MCs wearing hybrid cowboy/hiphop gear rap redneck-style over music blended from opposing styles while performing western line dancing, and mountain clogging maneuvers, synchronized with microphone cable rope tricks — guerrilla style, in laundromats nationwide.

Infecting blog comments
Long before #motrinmoms, I was researching and formulating ways to cloak persuasive messages into comments on the blogs of brand ambassadors.
My experiments led to the highly successful “Businessbib” blog infection strategy, as well inadvertently triggering the implosion of a highly trafficed fan blog for ABC Television’s “Lost”.
